Annual Cleaning and Maintenance of Your Fireplace and Why It’s Important

Regardless of whether you have a wood burning or natural gas fireplace, it is extremely important that you schedule an annual cleaning. What that cleaning entails depends on the type of fireplace that you have. While basic cleaning of a gas fireplace can be done on your own, it is still important to have a professional clean and inspect your fireplace.

Wood Fireplaces

Wood fireplaces need to be thoroughly cleaned by a chimney sweep at least once per year. The chimney can get very clogged with soot with repetitive use. You may also end up with critters trying to nest in your chimney during the off seasons. Getting your fireplace cleaned after the winter is over and inspected again before use in the fall is a good plan.

Gas Fireplaces

Even though natural gas burns cleaner than wood, you still need to have your chimney cleaned and the fireplace inspected annually. You can keep your gas fireplace clean by using approved cleaners and a dry cloth on the inside and outside of the fireplace, as far as you can reasonably reach. However, the upper reaches of the chimney still need to be thoroughly cleaned by a professional.

Why It’s Important

Your fireplace is only as safe as it is clean. If you want to be certain that you are not going to have any problems when using your fireplace, an annual cleaning is an absolute necessity. Think of it like an oil change for your car. It is important maintenance that extends the life of your fireplace.
