“The stockings were hung by the chimney with care.” Even the famous rhyme knows that we like to decorate our mantels for the holidays, but there are some things you need to keep in mind when you are trying to decorate for the holidays.
Hanging Stockings
Make sure that you hang your stockings on the mantel on either side of the actual fireplace. There shouldn’t be stockings hanging down in front of the door or grate to your fireplace. Stockings are made of synthetic fabrics that can become too hot and melt or catch fire. Be safe about your holiday stockings.
A Cluttered Mantel
You should also make sure that you do not overcrowd your mantel. You can probably do a nativity scene or evergreen boughs, but not both. You don’t want figurines too close to the edge of the mantel because they could become easily knocked down while tending the fire. You also don’t want evergreen boughs, real or fake, to hang down in front of the fireplace causing a fire hazard.
Skip the Garland
Some people like to decorate their mantel with additional garland from decorating the tree. Garland looks pretty and festive, but it is a fire hazard if it gets heated. If you do decide to hang garland on your mantel, make sure that it is not hanging down in front of the actual fireplace.
Having a fireplace during the holidays can be wonderful. It gives you a warm place to gather your family and loved ones. Decorating it for the holidays is something that everyone should enjoy. Just make sure that you are being safe.
